Grove Street Athletic Campus

Thanks to generous support from early donors, BB&N opened its newest campus during the 2022 Homecoming Weekend.

The naming of the James T. Berylson Field and the Class of 2022 Field recognizes the special generosity of these donors, including Class of 2022 parents through their Senior Parents Gift. The two new turf fields at the Grove Street campus are being used for practices and home games by Middle and Upper School football and soccer teams in the fall, and softball and lacrosse teams in the spring.

The Grove Street Campus is also used for community events such as Homecoming, Friday Knight Lights, Middle School Field Day, the Upper School Softball Homerun Derby, and  Alumni Soccer game. Grove Street has become a hub of school spirit and community connection, where students, families, and alumni come together to celebrate traditions, showcase talent, and create lasting memories. Whether under the stadium lights on a crisp fall evening or cheering on classmates in friendly competition, the campus fosters a sense of belonging and pride that extends beyond the playing fields.

Through a partnership with the City of Watertown, BB&N also has the use of two adjacent fields at Watertown’s Filippello Park during the school year, and the city is able to use BB&N’s Grove Street fields on weekends and during the summer. The addition of the Grove Street fields has made it possible for BB&N students to practice on campus and be home in time for dinner with their families.

“Grove has already made such a significant impact on our student-athletes and community, providing BB&N with the ability to utilize the ideal practice time slots on incredible surfaces for more teams, even in the rain,” said Jaye Locke, Director of Athletics. “We strive to give our teams the best opportunities to go after their goals and the Grove Street fields have helped us in this endeavor.”

Kulkarni-Kewalramani Family Endows Head Football Coach Position

Jay Kulkarni ‘23 came to BB&N as a sophomore and found his place to shine in the classroom and on the football field. A captain of the team his senior year, Jay is currently playing football at Bowdoin College. Jay’s transformative experience was in large part due to Head Football Coach and Science Teacher Mike Willey, and prompted his family to endow the Kulkarni-Kewalramani Head Coach of Football position in his honor.

“I’m humbled by the generosity of the Kulkarni family and their commitment not just to BB&N but to the football program. We have a tradition where the seniors on the team talk about what the experience of playing football at BB&N means to them and many of them talk about how impactful it was to their life, both in and out of school,” Mike Willey said. “Football can be important for many reasons, not just the game piece, but the bonds with teammates are really powerful. My family and I can’t thank the Kulkarni family enough, personally and professionally.”

We are so incredibly fortunate to have a home field as nice as Grove Street. The atmosphere of being there is amazing regarding the fans, the energy, and the field itself. I have made countless unforgettable memories on Grove Street, and I can’t wait to make more!

Looking at the hundreds of spectators lining BB&N’s beautiful, new Grove Street playing fields at Homecoming [in 2022], Jack Etter would be thrilled. He was always searching the surrounding neighborhoods for more field space.

BB&N is a special school with a lot of history. It has a long reputation of excellence in scholastic education and its students are known to be kind. We wanted to add excellence in athletics as a firm point of BB&N. My real hope is that this inspires a lot more giving.
