Upper School Assemblies Return to the NAC
With the Class of 2030 officially back from Bivouac, weekly assemblies with the whole student body started up on Monday. The first gathering was entirely student-run and focused on the program ‘Outside of the Box’ and Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month.
The ‘Outside of the Box’ program, pioneered by Rocky Yewendwossen ’25 in her Senior Spring Project, gives students a space to express themselves. As part of this, Liam Cunningham ’27 shared his experiences and love of music with his peers.
Cunningham detailed his love for old music, quipping that he listens to music that was popular before his parents were even potty trained. His love of music from the 50s and 60s led him to an unlikely friendship with a bus driver at BB&N named Dennis. Together, they forged a friendship built on discussing their favorite bands and Dennis’ experience at Woodstock.
The senior noted that not only can music build friendships, but it can cement memories. He shared some formative moments solidified by a song playing in the background, from a slip on a cruise to recovering from a season-ending injury. Tying it all together, Cunningham reflected, “Like the Beatles, we’re better when we come together. Together, we are BB&N.”
After engaging the audience with that opening speech, students from all grades participated in a Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month Jeopardy game. After a close trivia-off between the sophomore and senior classes, the seniors took home the crown–or bag of candy.
After that rousing assembly, students will lead more gatherings throughout the year, including more affinity group celebrations.
