Job Summary: Buckingham Browne & Nichols is seeking a part-time Upper School English teacher. Responsibilities will be teaching two English classes: 1) one section of sophomore English, a literature and writing course based on the study of various literary genres. Students read Macbeth, excerpts from The Bible, and significant classical and modern novels, plays, and poems. They write frequently in both critical and creative modes. 2) One teacher-designed literature elective based on a genre, a period, or a theme. The second semester of the junior year focuses on the writing process, including an 8-10 page New Yorker-style “profile” of a person at work. Students in the junior year also prepare for the English Advanced Placement examinations. Skills and Competencies: The ideal candidate should have excellent academic preparation, a strong background in the traditional, modern, and contemporary classics of British and American literature, preferably a master’s degree in English and at least four years’ experience at the high school level, teaching both literature and writing in an independent school or its equivalent. In addition, the candidate will demonstrate the following: · Enjoyment working with adolescents · Excellent writing skills · Warmth, sense of humor, and tact · Comfort with an independent school setting · Ability to collaborate with colleagues · Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents · High standards of professional conduct · Experience with AP and with designing electives a plus
