Lower School Students Bring Joy to Spring in Concert Series

By Hannah Garcia May 12, 2025

Every May, the lower school kicks off a music season across all three BB&N campuses. This year, the upper grade concerts featured a selection of soloists, and solo acts were introduced as students transitioned onto the risers. Focusing on an upbeat outlook, students performed songs about living in the moment and celebrating each other.

Brenda Chien, the new 3-6 music teacher, introduced the concept of having students play piano music during the transition period to keep the sound going throughout the whole concert. Students performed everything from “The Scientist” by Coldplay to “Sweet Dreams, Op. 39 No. 21” by Tchaikovsky. Every grade impressed the audience, with thunderous applause following each performance.

On Friday, the B-2 concert continued the concert series with a wide range of songs. First-grade students performed a song about saxophones using homemade aluminum instruments made in the makerspace with the technology teacher, Maria Elena Derrien. They also performed an original song penned by student PJ Karger ’36 for the BB&N radio. Between those inventive numbers and the guest appearances from faculty members and students in the other class performances, the concert was the perfect way to send students off into spring and summer.

After the two incredible performances, the Lower School sends the concert bug off to the Middle and Upper Schools for their shows in the coming weeks. Thanks to Sara Zur and Brenda Chien for making these concerts possible, and the facilities department for preparing the gym.
