Gimme Gimme an Upper School Spring Musical!

By Hannah Garcia March 9, 2026

This year, the Upper School Theater Department performed the fan-favorite musical, Mamma Mia. Featuring songs from the Swedish band ABBA, the show incorporates their top hits of the mid-1970s and early 80s into the narrative surrounding Sophie, a young adult trying to figure out who her father is after discovering her mom’s diary describing a wild summer fling with three men.

Set on a picturesque Greek island, Sophie (Leah Cooper ’28) lives with her mom Donna (Sydney Francis ’26). A few weeks before her wedding to Skye (Cookie N. ’27), she discovers her mother’s diary, detailing a wild summer with three men visiting the island. Sophie deduces that one of these men is her father, so she invites them all to the wedding.

There’s Harry (Vartan A. ’26), a banker who used to be a bit of a wild child, Sam (Salar S. ’26), a divorced, wealthy architect who regrets leaving Donna, and Bill (Charlie Griswold ’27), a jetsetting journalist. As past and present collide, Sophie tries to figure out who her father may be, while connecting with her mother along the way.

In a production full of spunk, heart, and catchy tunes, director Ross MacDonald battled through a slew of snow days to create a show for the ages in the Lindberg-Serries Theater. Standout performances from the potential fathers, Donna, and Sophie, as well as the energy and charm brought by the ensemble and supporting characters, made this jukebox musical a rousing success.

Thank you to the arts department, especially costume designer Louise Brown, stage manager Adam Howarth, and music directors Elliot Cless and Joel Sindelar for making this high-octane show a reality.
