Freshman Year

  • Strengthen vocabulary by reading.
  • Study hard, earn best grades possible.
  • Get involved in activities, during the summer, too.
  • Choose sophomore courses with care.
  • Sign up for June SAT subject tests in terminal courses if appropriate. (www.collegeboard.org)

Sophomore Year

September

  • Strengthen vocabulary by reading
  • Study hard, earn best grades possible
  • Check course selection
  • Get involved in activities, during summer, too

October

  • PSAT (scores received in December)

January

  • Begin to think about and sign up for June SAT subject tests in some terminal courses if appropriate - i.e. sciences, some math. (www.collegeboard.com)

Spring & Summer

  • Course selection--choose your courses thoughtfully!
  • SAT subject tests
  • Make your summer productive

Junior Year

October

  • Save your best graded papers, with teacher comments
  • Gather artwork for portfolio (if applicable)
  • PSAT (scores received in December)

January

  • BB&N College Kick-Off Event (for Juniors and their families)

February

  • First ACT
  • First meeting with college counselor

March

  • First SAT
  • Develop an initial college list with college counselor
  • Diagnostic visits to colleges during Spring Break

April

  • Seek out your counselor
  • ACT
  • Attend BISCCA College Fair at Milton Academy

May

  • Speak with two teachers about letters of recommendation
  • SAT
  • AP exams
  • Begin setting up interviews at colleges that offer them

June

July & August

  • Work on a draft of the Common Application and essays.
  • Visit colleges!

Senior Year

September

  • Update counselor on college list
  • ACT
  • Confirm two teachers to write recommendations
  • Meet with college representatives
  • Begin to file all financial aid forms (FAFSA and/or CSS Profile)

October

  • SAT

  • Visit or re-visit colleges during long weekends
  • With college counselor, review and revise college list
  • Meet with college representatives visiting your school
  • Turn in school forms to college office
  • Pay attention to application deadlines and requirements
  • Work on applications

November

  • Nov. 1 - First major Early Decision/Early Action application deadline
  • Nov. 15 - Second major ED/EA application deadline

December

  • Notify your accepted college of your enrollment plans
