Upper School Students Celebrate Community Through Workshops

By Hannah Garcia February 19, 2024

Following the return of Community Day at the Upper School last year, students once again organized a triumphant display of togetherness at BB&N. Supported by Maria Graciela Alcid and the DEIG department, students organized almost 50 workshops designed to give their peers spaces to express themselves.

To kick off the day, students gathered in the Nicholas Athletic Center gymnasium to reflect on the theme of the day “finding light in darkness.” Students and faculty members shared what brings them joy in hard times, including teaching, spending time outside, and even cooking.

The assembly then participated in four different record-breaking activities: a massive tournament of rock-paper-scissors, the longest time holding a chord, an immense game of musical chairs, and finally, the longest slow clap.

After an invigorating start to the day, students broke out into different workshop groups over two periods to discuss personal experiences relating to their identities with their peers. Other workshops included activities such as making lava lamps, crafting slime, using pipettes to make art, decorating cookies, and even playing with puppies!

The sunny disposition of students on February 14th had nothing to do with Valentine’s Day or the shining weather, but all because of the light emanating from a day of gathering as a community to celebrate each other.
