Jazz Ensembles

The Upper School offers students the opportunity to participate in one of our jazz ensembles; they all perform during jazz concerts held at the end of each semester as well as in assemblies and other more informal settings.

  • There are four jazz ensembles at the Upper School: one for the 9th grade which meets as a class three days a week and three others that meet after school once a week. In special cases an Independent Study group might be offered as well.
  • Most students who take Jazz 9 continue in our evening jazz ensembles through their senior year.
  • The emphasis is on improvisational techniques and group playing. Musical selections vary, but mostly comprise of compositions by jazz greats such as Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, and others.
  • A few classes per year are devoted to a comprehensive discussion of jazz history and styles.
