Endowment & Spendable Funds

The BB&N endowment, which has a market value of $71.6 million as of June 30, 2016, is comprised of nearly 175 named and general endowed funds, the income from which provides crucial support each year for BB&N’s operating budget.

Established through both outright gifts and bequests from alumni/ae, parents, and friends with a vision for BB&N’s future, these funds provide the long-term financial support necessary to sustain many areas of the BB&N operating budget, from faculty compensation, professional development, and financial aid to academic and athletic programs.

The following list describes many of BB&N’s current endowment and spendable funds and the areas of the budget they support:

General/Unrestricted Endowment

The general endowment supports the annual operating budget of the school including faculty and staff salaries, academic programs, the library, athletics, etc.

John Moors Cabot Fund
Established in 1981 through a trust from John Moors Cabot 1919.

Thomas D. Cabot Fund
Established in 1985 through a gift from Thomas Cabot 1913, this fund supports secondary education particularly in the math and sciences.

Rosalind E. Gorin General Endowment Fund
Established in 1985 by former and current trustee Rosalind E. Gorin ’62.

Nathaniel M. Gorton '56 General Endowment Fund
Established in 1991 by former board chair The Honorable Nathaniel M. Gorton ’56, P’88, ’90, ’92.

Conrad C. Hunneman ’45 Memorial Fund
Established in 1997 by J. Richard Hunneman, Jr. ’42 in memory of his brother.

Paul Jacobs General Endowment Fund
Established in 1969 through a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jacobs P’60, ’63, ’69.

Faculty Compensation Endowment

BB&N Faculty Compensation Endowment Fund
Income from BB&N’s general faculty compensation endowment is used to support the school’s faculty compensation budget.

The Barrows Family Master Teacher Chair
Established in 2011 as part of the Opening Minds Campaign, The Barrows Family Master Teacher Chair honors a senior faculty member at the Upper School for excellence in teaching and faculty leadership, with a preference for an individual who has demonstrated exceptional leadership both in and out of the classroom through mentoring relationships with his or her students. The first holder of the Barrows Family Chair is Upper School theater teacher Mark Lindberg.

These funds were established by parents of the Class of 2001, 2003, and 2004 to support BB&N’s faculty compensation budget.

The Class of 2007 Faculty Endowment Fund
This fund was established by parents in the Class of 2007 through their Senior Parents’ Gift campaign and will provide permanent endowment to support BB&N’s faculty compensation and professional development budget.

These funds were established by parents in the Class of 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 through their Senior Parents’ Gift campaign and will provide permanent endowment to support BB&N’s faculty compensation and professional development budget.

Armen Dedekian Faculty Endowment Fund
The Armen Dedekian Faculty Endowment Fund was established in 2008 to honor long-time BB&N Russian teacher and coach Armen Dedekian upon his retirement from BB&N after 36 years of distinguished service. The fund supports the general faculty salary endowment program of BB&N.

John H. Etter Teaching Fund
Established in honor of John H. Etter ’49, Director of Athletics for more than 40 years, this fund supports the Director of Athletics position.

The Honestas Future Leader Instructorship
Established by the Parents of the Class of 2013, the Honestas Future Leader Instructorship is named for the first part of BB&N’s motto, Honor, a fundamental value practiced by our faculty and students every day. This instructorship honors the many faculty members who have been transformative in the lives of the members of the Class of 2013, and as it is awarded, it will recognize the special contributions that promising early and mid-career faculty have made to the School community. The current holder of the Honestas Future Leader Instructorship is Upper School Russian teacher Joshua Walker.

Kargman Family Fund for Faculty Salary Endowment
Established in 2010 by Bill and Lynn Kargman P'01, '05, this fund supports the general faculty salary endowment budget of BB&N.

The Legends Fund
The Legends Fund was created in 2007 to recognize BB&N’s faculty “legends” upon their retirement and to honor their extraordinary commitment to the School during their many years of service. This fund provides permanent support to BB&N’s faculty endowment for compensation, professional development, and summer travel grants.

Leibovitch Faculty Salary Endowment Fund
Established in 2010 by Richard Leibovitch P’12, this fund supports the general faculty salary endowment budget of BB&N with a preference for an Upper School faculty member.

The Jeanette Markham Master Teacher Chair
Established by an anonymous donor in 2009, this Chair provides support for the salary and a one-time stipend for a senior member of the BB&N faculty who has made exceptionally valuable contributions to the life of the school, in recognition of his or her excellence in teaching and faculty leadership. The current holder of The Jeanette Markham Master Teacher Chair is Lower School 4th Grade teacher William J. Hritz.

Mary Newmann Faculty Fund
Established in 2000 by current and former trustees of the Buckingham School, Browne & Nichols, and BB&N, this fund honors former Head of School Mary Newmann and is used to support the professional growth and development of BB&N’s faculty across all three campuses of the school.

The Edgar H. Nichols Future Leader Instructorship
Established by an anonymous donor in 2011, this Instructorship honors the co-founder of Browne & Nichols who led the School from 1883 until his death in 1910. The Instructorship provides support for the salary and a one-time stipend for a promising mid-career faculty member in recognition of his or her special to the school community, academic accomplishments, and evidence of personal growth.

The Paideia Master Teacher Chair
Established by an anonymous donor in 2009, this Chair provides support for the salary and a one-time stipend for a senior member of the BB&N faculty who has made exceptionally valuable contributions to the life of the school, in recognition of his or her excellence in teaching and faculty leadership. The current holder of The Founding Paideia Master Teacher Chair is Middle School History Department Chair and Teacher William Rogers.

Edwin H. B. Pratt Faculty Fund
Established in 1975 through a bequest from the Edwin H. Baker Pratt Trust, this fund supports BB&N’s faculty compensation budget.

Edwin and Aileen Pratt Faculty Development Fund
This fund was established by members of the Edwin and Aileen Pratt Fund Committee in 1978 in recognition of the Pratts’ invaluable service to the School. The fund supports the moral and intellectual atmosphere at BB&N by providing for faculty compensation.

Rudman Family Athletic Fund
Established in 1984 by the Rudman family on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Stanley and Dorothy Rudman P’66, ’70, GP’05 and re-designated in 2003 by Jeffrey Rudman '66, this fund underwrites the salary of the boys' football coach at BB&N and supports general expenses of the football and/or general athletic program.

Senior Parents' Fund for Faculty and Families
Established by parents of the Class of 2012, this Fund supports the faculty compensation and financial aid endowment programs at BB&N.

Subramaniam Family Faculty Salary Endowment Fund
Established in 2012 by Evelyn and Sundar Subramaniam P'21, '22, this fund will be used to support the general faculty salary endowment budget of BB&N with a preference for a faculty member at the Lower School.

The Marian W. Vaillant Future Leader Instructorship
Established by an anonymous donor in 2009, this Instructorship honors the third Headmistress of The Buckingham School who served the School from 1935 to 1962. The Instructorship provides support for the salary and a one-time stipend for a promising mid-career faculty member in recognition of his or her special contributions to the school community, academic accomplishments, and evidence of personal growth. The current holder of The Marian W. Vaillant Future Leader Instructorship is Middle School drama teacher Christa Crewdson.

Faculty Professional Development Endowment

BB&N Faculty Professional Development Fund
Income from BB&N’s general faculty professional development endowment supports curricular research and program development, workshops and conferences, graduate coursework, and summer travel and study grants that reward senior faculty for long service and dedication to BB&N.

Frances Ackerly Fund for Gender Studies
Established in 1991 in honor of faculty emerita Frances Ackerly, this fund supports professional development for Middle School faculty to do research, write, attend conferences, and educate the community on gender issues in education.

Betsy Allen Fund for Lower School Special Initiatives
Established in 2006 by a group of parents to honor Betsy Allen, a beloved member of the BB&N Lower School faculty for nearly 30 years, this fund provides support for specialists and other resources to train and educate Lower School teachers-particularly Morse Building (Beginner, Kindergarten, and Grade 1) teachers-on child development issues and other areas related to but outside of specific curricular topics.

Barber Family Teachers as Scholars Fund
Established in 2011 by Jeffrey Barber and Kimberly Hsu-Barber P’24,’25, the income from this Fund is used to support the costs associated with BB&N’s participation in the Teachers as Scholars (TAS) program. TAS offers one- to three-day content-based seminars for BB&N faculty led by college and university faculty to broaden their knowledge of their subject area or another topic of personal interest.

Class of 1999 Faculty Development Fund
Established by Class of 1999 students during their senior year, this fund supports BB&N’s general faculty development budget.

Class of 2015 Faculty Opportunity Fund
Established by parents in the Class of 2015 through their Senior Parents' Gift Program, the purpose of this Fund is to support collaborative learning opportunities for groups of BB&N faculty members, either on campus, at national conferences or training programs, or through group visits to other schools in the U.S. or internationally.

Class of 2017 Global Education Fund 
Established in 2017 by parents in the Class of 2017, this fund supports faculty professional development initiatives related to global education.

Class of 2022 Lower School Faculty Opportunity Fund
Established by parents in the Class of 2022 through their Sixth Grade Gift Program, the purpose of this Fund is to support collaborative learning opportunities for groups of Lower School faculty members, either on campus, at national conferences or training programs, or through group visits to other schools in the U.S. or internationally.

Clifton Family Fund
Established in 1987 by former trustee Roger Clifton P’86, this fund promotes programs for faculty that will expand their understanding of new points of view and encourage them to be more responsive and inclusive in their teaching.

The Curhan-Pokross Fund to Promote Faculty Excellence
Established by Prof. and Mrs. Ronald C. Curhan P’86, ’89 and David R. and Muriel Pokross GP’86, ’89, ’09 to encourage and promote faculty excellence in the Upper School, this fund provides training and professional development opportunities for Upper School faculty.

Educational Technology Endowment Fund
Gifts designated for educational technology endowment provide support for BB&N’s educational technology training budget.

The Eighth Grade Endowment Fund for Middle School Faculty
Established in 2008 by parents of the Class of 2012, this Fund is to be used to enhance the lives of Middle School faculty and thereby the learning environment on the Middle School Campus by supporting special initiatives that are meaningful to the faculty on this campus.

Garai Family Math Faculty Fund
Established in 2006 by Gabor Garai and Susan Pravda P’11,’13, this fund is used to enhance and enrich BB&N’s math program on all three campuses by providing support for professional development for math faculty, for external consultants related to the math program, and other general support for the interests and talents of the math faculty.

The Gordon and Rowe Family Upper School Faculty Enrichment Fund
Established in 2012, this fund provides grants to support professional enrichment opportunities for Upper School faculty members who have demonstrated exceptional performance in the classroom and have maintained a teaching assignment of at least fifty percent. Grants made through this Fund will support programs designed by faculty to enrich and enhance their BB&N teaching by sharing their experiences with students, other faculty, and/or incorporating their new insights into their teaching and mentoring of students.

Harkness Teaching Fund
The Harkness Teaching Fund was established in 2007 by Mark and Marie Schwartz P’08,’11 and John and Lynn Reichenbach P'05 to provide financial support for Upper School faculty to receive training in the Harkness Teaching Method.

The Anthony Hixon Family English Faculty Endowment Fund
The Anthony Hixon Family English Faculty Endowment Fund, established in 2007 by Diana and Anthony Hixon P’07 and Augusta Hixon ’07, is intended to be used to provide support for professional development for English Department/Language Arts faculty with a preference for Upper School faculty and a secondary preference for Middle School faculty. A portion of the fund income may also be used to support outside speakers, visiting writers, and other special opportunities to enhance the English program for Upper and Middle School students.

The Kargman Family Faculty Fund for Global Education
Established in 2016 by Bill and Lynn Kargman P'01,'05, this Fund supports professional development for faculty across all three campuses to support their work, both individually and in teams, to develop new global education curriculum as well as global competencies within existing programs.
 
David L. Kasdon Fund

Established by Mrs. Jenifer Kasdon P’91, ’98 in memory of her husband, Dr. David L. Kasdon ‘63, P’91, ’98, this fund supports Upper School faculty professional development.

Helen Landess Fund
Established in 1989 by Dr. and Mrs. J. Philip Kistler, Mr. and Mrs. David B. Roberts ’67, P’97, ’99, and Pam Turner P’91, ’94 to honor Mrs. Helen Landess, a beloved teacher in the Lower School for 37 years, this fund supports Lower School faculty development with a focus on language arts. A portion of the income from this fund also supports the annual Landess Author Series for the Lower School community.

Livingston Fund for Middle and Upper School Science
Established in 1997, this fund is used to support professional development initiatives for Middle and Upper School Science faculty, with a preference for Upper School faculty.

W. Allen Rossiter Faculty Professional Development Fund
Established in 2008 by family and friends of retiring faculty member W. Allen Rossiter, in recognition of his dedication and commitment to BB&N during his 39-year career as a member of the Upper School faculty and administration, this fund supports professional development for Upper School faculty.

Sue Scarborough Fund for Lower School Faculty
Established in 2006 by parents of the Class of 2012 and intended to be perpetuated by parents of future classes of sixth grade parents, this fund is to be used to enhance broadly the lives of Lower School faculty as well as the overall learning environment of the Lower School, and is to be allocated each year for special initiatives and endeavors that are particularly meaningful to Lower School faculty. The fund was renamed in 2011 to honor outgoing Lower School Director Sue Scarborough.

Shera Selzer LS Faculty Innovation Fund
Established by parents in the Class of 2023 through their 6th Grade Gift to honor retiring Lower School Director Shera Selzer, this fund provides resources over and above the current LS Professional Development budget to provide grants to one or more LS faculty to develop new initiatives that sustain Shera's passions and priorities.

Anne Elliott Smith Math Faculty Development Fund
This fund honors the memory of a beloved and distinguished Middle School mathematics teacher, Anne Elliott Smith. The fund provides support for curriculum development in mathematics or related studies with a preference for faculty and programs at the Middle School.

Elizabeth Thacher Stowe Teaching Fund
This fund was established in 1974 in honor of Elizabeth Stowe, who served as Headmistress of The Buckingham School from 1963 until 1974, in recognition of her talents as a stimulating teacher and able administrator. The fund supports faculty professional development with special emphasis on projects designed to expand the interrelationship of the teacher and student in the teaching process.

Marian Vaillant Fund
Established in 1984 by Annette B. Cottrell Merle-Smith ’49 and her husband to honor the former headmistress of The Buckingham School, the Vaillant Fund supports faculty development through professional meetings, seminars, and workshops.

Susanne B. Williams Fund for Social Studies Research
Established by Mr. Manning A. Williams in honor of Susanne Williams P’69, ’71, ‘74, a former second grade and social studies teacher in the Lower School, the Williams Fund supports programs that encourage an interdisciplinary approach to the Lower School social studies curriculum, as well as opportunities for Lower School faculty to study and travel with their families.

Financial Aid Endowment

Financial aid endowment funds have been established over the years by alumni/ae, parents, and other friends of the School who are committed to making a BB&N education available to talented students regardless of their financial means. Financial aid endowment funds support either the general financial aid budget of the school, or the financial aid award to a specific type of student specified by the donor.

BB&N Financial Aid Fund
Income from BB&N’s general financial aid endowment supports the School’s annual financial aid budget.

The Alpert Family Financial Aid Fund
The Alpert Family Fund was established in 2007 by Norman W. Alpert ’76 to support the general financial aid program of BB&N by providing funding for an inner city student, with a preference for an Upper School student.

The Armida V. Beatrice Scholarship Fund
This fund was established by G. Joseph Beatrice P'74 in memory of his wife. The fund provides financial assistance to an Upper School scholar athlete.

A. Ellis Benjamin Fund
Established in 1951 by A. Ellis Benjamin P’46, ’50, ’53, this fund provides financial aid to an Upper School student.

The Jenny Fiol Birch 1987 Financial Aid Fund
The Jenny Birch Fund was established by alumni/ae and friends of the Class of 1987 in memory of Jenny Fiol Birch ’87. Originally established as a spendable fund to honor Jenny’s cherished experience in Italy during her Junior year, the fund was endowed in 2012 through a gift from Jenny's mother, Jeanne Burlingame, and is intended to assist BB&N financial aid students’ expenses for the School’s study abroad program.

Robert F. Bradford Scholarship Fund
This fund honors former Governor of the Commonwealth and former trustee Robert F. Bradford ’18, who set standards of distinguished public service in the fields of government and education.

Brizius Family Financial Aid Fund
Established in 2006 by Charles and Kate Brizius P’19, ‘21, this fund is used to support BB&N’s general financial aid budget with a preference for a Lower School student.

Florence V. Burden Foundation Fund
Established in 1996, this fund is to be used for financial aid for minority and/or economically disadvantaged students in the Lower School.

John and Archontoula Bucuvalas Scholarship Fund
Established in 1998 by Michael Bucuvalas ’66 and his wife Martha, this fund provides financial aid for talented and deserving students, with a preference for students from the Somerville Public Schools.

Cable Family Financial Aid Fund
Established in 2005 by members of the Cable family, this fund is to be used to support the general financial aid program at BB&N.

The Joe and Lucy Chung Financial Aid Fund
Established by BB&N parents Joe and Lucy Chung in 2007, this fund is to be used to support the general financial aid program at BB&N.

Class of 2014 Financial Aid Enrichment Fund
Established by Class of 2014 parents through their Senior Parents' Gift Program, this Fund is intended to support the supplemental/non-tuition portion of the financial aid budget.

Class of 2016 Supplemental Financial Aid Fund
Established by Class of 2016 parents through their Senior Parents' Gift Program, this Fund is intended to support the supplemental-non-tuition portion of the financial aid budget.

Class of 2017 Financial Aid Fund
Created by parents of the Class of 2017 through their Senior Parents' Gift, this Fund supports BB&N's general financial aid budget.

The Bertram A. and Ronald M. Druker Charitable Foundation Financial Aid Fund
This fund was established in 2010 by Kim Druker Stockwell ’86, Pel Stockwell, and the Bertram A. and Ronald M. Druker Charitable Foundation and supports BB&N’s general financial aid program.

John H. Durant Fund
Established by family and friends in memory of John Harding Durant ’41, this fund provides financial support to a student who exhibits an unbounded curiosity in the area of the natural sciences, with a preference for students interested in physics or chemistry.

Osborne & Eleanor Earle Scholarship Fund
Created in 1982 by Eleanor Earle P’61, ’65 in memory of her husband, this fund supports the general financial aid budget of the school.

John and Jan Fitzpatrick Financial Aid Fund
Established in 2004 by John Fitzpatrick ’73 and Jan Fitzpatrick, this fund supports BB&N’s financial aid program with a preference for a scholar-athlete from a diverse ethnic background.

Peter K. Gunness Scholars Fund
This Fund was established in 2014 by BB&N alumni/ae, parents, and friends in honor of Peter K. Gunness, Browne & Nichols and BB&N Head of School from 1969-1992. The Fund recognizes his many contributions to Browne & Nichols and BB&N including his crucial role in guiding the School through the merger of Browne & Nichols and Buckingham to form Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in 1974. The Fund supports the general financial aid program of BB&N, with a preference for an Upper School student.

The William S. Howe ’47 Financial Aid Fund
Established in 2008 by the estate of B&N alumnus William S. Howe, Jr. ’47, this Fund supports BB&N’s financial aid program with a preference for minority students and others from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Annette D. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established by Mr. and Mrs. Dennis E. Johnson P’82 in memory of their daughter, Annette D. Johnson ’82, this fund provides general support for BB&N’s financial aid budget.

Christopher James Kern Scholarship Fund
Established in 2001 by family and friends in memory of Christopher Kern ’99, this fund provides financial aid to an Upper School scholar-athlete.

Lehner Family Financial Aid Fund
Established in 2011 by The Orchard Foundation/Michael and Monica Lehner P’12,’14,’16, this Fund supports the BB&N financial aid program with the stipulation that 75 percent of the Fund income in a given year be allocated for the financial aid grant awarded to the student recipient, and 25 percent be allocated for any supplemental/non-tuition expenses (e.g., books, computers for home use, academic trips) required by that student.

George and Karen Levy Family Fund
Established by the Levy family in 1994, this fund supports international travel opportunities for talented students with demonstrated financial need.

Litterae Financial Aid Fund
Established by an anonymous donor in 2011, the income from this Fund is used to support the general financial aid program of BB&N by providing funding for a student requiring full or nearly full support from the School. It should be awarded to a capable, hard-working, and thoughtful student with demonstrated financial need who has excelled in his or her prior academic environment, with a preference for a student who has been admitted to BB&N primarily for their academic strengths and potential.

Litterae II Financial Aid Fund
Established by an anonymous donor in 2011, the income from this Fund is to be used to support the general financial aid program of BB&N by providing funding for a student requiring full or nearly full support from the School.

Mannion Family Financial Aid Fund
Established in 2014, this Fund is used to support the general financial aid program by providing funding for a student requiring full or nearly full support from the School.

E. Vincent Merry Fund
Named in memory of E. Vincent Merry, husband of BB&N former trustee Karan A. Merry P’86, ’91, this fund was established in 1980 and provides financial assistance for academic or special programs for minority students and faculty.

Lawrence J. and Anne Cable Rubenstein Scholarship Fund
Established in 1997 by the Cable family and the Lawrence J. and Anne Cable Rubenstein Foundation, this fund provides financial aid support to less advantaged children in the Boston area.

Shawkemo Financial Aid Fund
Established by an anonymous donor in 2012, the income from this Fund supports the general financial aid program of BB&N by providing funding for a talented and deserving student requiring full or nearly full support from the School.

Sidney L. and Lester O. Simonds Financial Aid Fund
This fund was established in 1986 by Marshall Simonds and Jonathan O. Simonds ’48 in honor of their fathers, Sidney L. Simonds 1910 and Lester O. Simonds 1913. The fund supports the general financial aid program at BB&N.

Steppingstone-to-Opportunity Fund
Originally established in 1997 by John Simon ’80 and his wife Susan, this fund supports BB&N’s financial aid program with a preference for 7th and 8th grade students from the Steppingstone Program. Funds may also be allocated to other students with demonstrated financial need in grades nine through twelve, with preference given to former Steppingstone students.

Craig B. Stonestreet Fund
Established in 1991 by family and friends in memory of Craig B. Stonestreet, Browne & Nichols Class of 1949 and Former Director of the Upper School, income from this fund is used to provide financial aid to deserving Upper School scholar-athletes. The Fund also provides an annual prize to a member of the junior class in recognition of high scholarship, excellence in athletics, and constructive influence within the School.

The Thompson Foster Street Foundation Fund
Established in 2004 by David J. Thompson '85 and Elizabeth Thompson, this fund supports BB&N's financial aid program with a preference for a scholar-athlete from a diverse ethnic background.

Alexandra and Ben Trustman Financial Aid Fund
Established in 2001 by a BB&N grandparent in honor of her two BB&N grandchildren, this fund is used to support the general financial aid program with a strong preference for assisting an African-American student and a slight preference for a Lower School African-American student.

The Mildred and Clarence Williams Financial Aid Fund
Established in 2007 by Clarence G. Williams, Jr. ’85 and his wife Joanne Taylor, the Mildred and Clarence Williams Fund is named in honor of Clarence’s parents. The Fund supports the general financial aid program of BB&N with a preference for supporting an Upper School inner city student of color and preferably a student who entered BB&N in the Lower or Middle School.

The Wu Scholar Fund
Established in 2015 by Fan Wu ’98 to honor his parents, Yaotang and Lixiang Wu, this Fund is intended to provide support for the general financial aid program with a preference for an Upper School student with a strong aptitude for math.

Asian Studies Endowment Fund
Established in 1999, this fund supports faculty salaries and program expenses related to the Chinese or other Asian language studies program.

Maureen Baker Lower School Language Arts Fund
Established in 2004 by a group of Lower School parents to honor Maureen Baker, a Lower School teacher at The Buckingham School and BB&N from 1964 to 2004, the Baker Fund supports the Lower School language arts program with a preference for Morse Building (Beginner, Kindergarten, and Grade 1) students. Uses for the fund include support for a poet-in-residence, a visiting author or illustrator specializing in writing for younger students, or professional development in the language arts for Morse Building faculty.

Patricia Ann Blevins '44 Drama Fund
Established in 2016 by family of Patricia Blevins Till '44, this fund honors the memory of this alumna who developed her lifelong passion for drama during her time at Buckingham. The Blevins Drama Fund is to be used to support the ongoing expenses of the drama programs on BB&N's Lower and Middle School campuses.

John Brisbois 21st Century Library Fund

Established in 2010 by members of the Browne & Nichols Class of 1960 in honor of their 50th Reunion, the Brisbois Fund honors John J. Brisbois’ 33-year career (1952-1985) at Browne & Nichols and BB&N as a history teacher and his position as librarian or Head of the “Media Center.” This endowed and spendable fund is intended to provide funding for the needs of the BB&N libraries with a preference for the Upper School Library. By establishing an endowed fund, this class has ensured that there will be funds available, in perpetuity, to be innovative and flexible no matter what the needs of the “21st century library” might become.

Larry Cabot Fund for Girls’ Crew
Established in 2000 in honor of long-time faculty member and girls’ crew coach Larry Cabot, this fund supports the program expenses of the girls’ crew program.

Chow Family Theatre Fund
Established in 2011 by Gerald and Lily Chow P’11 in recognition of the faculty at BB&N, especially Theater Teacher Mark Lindberg, this Fund provides both endowed and spendable support for the production costs associated with plays at the Upper School.

Class of 1987 Audio Visual Fund
Established in honor of the graduating students in the Class of 1987, this fund is used to support current and future needs of the audiovisual program at the Upper School.

Class of 1988 International Fund
Established in honor of graduating students in the Class of 1988, this fund supports international education at BB&N by providing study and travel opportunities for students and faculty; curriculum expansion in international studies, including foreign languages; or bringing internationally renowned speakers to the School.

Class of 1989 Art Fund
Established in honor of graduating students in the Class of 1989, this fund supports all aspects of the art program at BB&N and may be used for faculty enrichment, visiting artists, speakers, curriculum development, cultural activities, travel, or special equipment.

Class of 1990 Science Fund
Established in honor of graduating students in the Class of 1990, this fund supports the teaching of science at BB&N.

Class of 2017 Global Education Fund
Created by parents of the Class of 2017 through their Senior Parents' Gift, this Fund supports BB&N's global education program including faculty professional development, curriculum development, and membership in and participation of faculty and students in international organizations.

Comitas Fund – Lower School
Established in 1996 through an anonymous gift, this fund provides program support to promote anti-bias, gender-fair curriculum and seminars, the hiring of faculty of color, and diversity and gender equity training at the Lower School.

Comitas Fund – Middle School
Established in 2000, this fund provides program support to promote anti-bias, gender-fair curriculum and seminars, the hiring of faculty of color, and diversity and gender equity training at the Middle School.

George Deptula Russian Program Enrichment Fund
Established in 1995 by the Dangel family in honor of former Russian History teacher George Deptula P’66, this fund enriches the programs of the Russian Department by supporting the acquisition of resource materials, underwriting visits by distinguished guest speakers, and providing financial assistance to enable students of Russian to travel and participate in special programs.

James Ducey Book Fund
Established in 1986 by J. Richard Hunneman, Jr. ’42, this fund supports the purchase of books and periodicals in science, technology, and applied sciences.

English Seminar Learning Fund
Established in 1997, this fund was established in honor of Jane Clark, former Middle School teacher and Academic Skills Coordinator. The fund supports BB&N programs that directly benefit students and accommodate their learning styles, with a preference for programs for 7th and 8th grade students.

Fesus Girls’ Crew Fund
Established in 1993 by Mr. and Mrs. George J. Fesus P’90, ’93, this fund supports the girls’ crew program.

Fraulein Grote Fund for Upper School Languages

Named in memory of Fraulein Anna E. Grote, a teacher of German at the Buckingham School from 1904 - 1952, this Fund supports the general programs of the Upper School World Languages Program, with a preference for expenses on any campus that relate to German culture, literature, and history.

The Lee Ginsburg Herbst and Arthur L. Herbst Math Fund
Established in 2011 by Lee Ginsburg Herbst ’53 and Dr. Arthur L. Herbst, the Herbst Fund will be used to advance the teaching and learning of students with particular promise in mathematics.

Hintlian Library Art Book Fund
This fund was established in 1987 by Ann Hintlian in honor of her daughter LuAnn Hintlian Ohanian ’73, and is used to purchase books on the arts for the Upper School library.

Hodder Lecture Fund
Established in 1998 by colleagues and friends, this fund honors the contributions of Elizabeth D. Hodder P’80, ’82, ’85, ‘87 to the Upper School during her eight-year tenure as Dean of Students. The fund supports a program to bring to the School a recognized artist, athlete, scholar, or leader to meet with classes, give workshops, and/or speak at an All-School assembly.

Hoyt Family Library Endowment Fund
Established in 2003 through the trust of Natalie Hoyt, this fund is named in memory of her brothers Barrett Hoyt ’26 and Harrison Hoyt ’34. The income from this fund is used for the purchase of books for the BB&N libraries.

Marina Keegan '08 Memorial Fund/Summer Fellowship
The Marina Keegan ’08 Memorial Fund was established in 2012 to honor the memory of Marina Keegan '08, a student noteworthy for her wide-ranging involvement in BB&N and her distinct talents. The Fund will be used to support the Marina Keegan '08 Summer Fellowship which will be awarded annually to Upper School students interested in pursuing their own projects focusing on either artistic pursuits or activist causes with the hope that the experiences funded through the Fellowship will reflect the spirit and ideals of Marina Keegan.

The Legacy Foreign Language Fund
The Legacy Foreign Language Fund was established by Eleanor Campbell ’76 to enhance the objectives of the language program on all three campuses. Uses of the Fund include special programs for language students both in and out of the classroom, the cost of classroom materials, and expenses related to other areas that would enhance the teaching and learning of these languages, particularly the strategy of “immersing” students in the language that they are studying.

Lower School Reading Fund
Established in 1999, the Lower School Reading Fund supports the “special needs” portion of the Lower School reading program by accommodating students’ learning styles as readers.

Anna Minot Theater Production Fund
Established in 2006 by Anna Minot Warren ’35, a lifelong professional actor who helped establish the Buckingham drama program, this fund provides income to help underwrite the annual production costs of the Upper School Drama Program including such expenses as costume purchase or rental, set materials, script and music rental, lighting supplies, and royalties.

Pechet Family Book Fund
The Pechet Fund is used for the purchase of books for BB&N’s libraries.

Petropoulos Art Scholars Program Fund
The Petropoulos Art Scholars Program Fund represents a new direction for the Petropoulos Art Prize Fund, originally established in 1983 by Andre Balazs ’75 and Peter Gergely ’72 in memory of John B. Petropoulos P’93, a beloved member of the Browne & Nichols and BB&N Upper School Art Department faculty from 1962 to 1982. The Petropoulos Art Scholars Program provides an enriched experience for Upper School students who participate in independent study programs in the visual and performing arts.

Saunders Family Fitness Center Equipment Fund
Established in 1999 through gifts from Gary and Barbara Saunders P’00, ’04 and Jeffrey and Debra Saunders P’03, this fund supports the purchase of replacement equipment for the Fitness Center in the Nicholas Athletic Center.

The Sixth Grade Endowment Fund for Student Enrichment
This fund was established in 2007 by parents in the Class of 2013 to enhance and enrich the learning opportunities for Lower School students through supplemental programs in the arts, sciences, or other academic areas.

Reeves Stratton Science Fund
Established in 1980 by Browne & Nichols alumni from classes that graduated in the mid-1940s, this fund honors the memory of B&N faculty members James Arthur Reeves and Charles Edward Stratton. The fund supports the purchase of reference materials for the Upper School library, provides materials for the Science Department, and supports faculty professional development.

Marjorie Thompson Fund
Established in 1989 by family and friends in memory of Marjorie Thompson to honor her contributions and devotion to the School during the many years she served as Director of Development, this fund provides support for the Head’s Discretionary Fund.

The Upper School Critical Languages Program Fund
Established in 2006 by an anonymous donor, this fund honors Upper School Language Department Chair Armen Dedekian, a distinguished member of the BB&N language faculty from 1971 to 2008 who played a crucial role in strengthening and expanding BB&N’s nationally known Russian language program. The Fund provides program support for the teaching of non-traditional and less commonly taught languages including the currently taught languages of Russian, Chinese, and Arabic, with a preference for program support for Russian.

John H. “Doc” Walters Fund
Established in 1999 in memory of long-time Upper School science teacher Doc Walters P’68, ‘70, this fund supports the purchase of equipment, professional development for science faculty, and other ongoing expenses of the Upper School Science Department.

BB&N Spendable Funds

The funds listed below provide spendable resources to support a variety of School priorities including financial aid, faculty compensation, and academic support initiatives.

The Camp Marienfeld Fund
The Camp Marienfeld Fund was established in 2010 by the Board of Trustees for the purpose of providing support to the programs and facilities of Camp Marienfeld in Nelson and Harrisville, NH. Gifts to this fund support the facilities and property of the camp and may support operating as well as capital improvements related to all School-sponsored programs based at this property.

Community Family Fund
Established in 2001 by a group of BB&N parents in response to the events of September 11, 2001, this fund provides support to current BB&N families in immediate need of tuition assistance following the death of a parent.

Community Family Fund II
The Community Family Fund II was established in 2008 by members of the BB&N community and friends to help address the unmet financial needs relating to a BB&N student’s education at the School arising as a result of an unexpected or unforeseen event that leads to a change in the family’s circumstances.

The Community Supplemental Financial Aid Fund
The Community Supplemental Financial Aid Fund was established in 2008 by a current BB&N family to provide support for non-tuition expenses (such as books, academic and athletic trips, and computers for home use) for students receiving financial assistance from the School.

The Armen Dedekian Russian Program Fund
The Armen Dedekian Russian Program Fund was established in 2007 by Michael Porter P’06, ’07 in appreciation of the strong impact that the Russian program has had on students at BB&N and in honor of his daughter Sonia ’07’s experience in the program during her time at BB&N. This spendable fund is intended to provide income to support expenses of the Russian program not covered by the department’s operating budget such as costs associated with developing new programs or other expenses outside the normal classroom program.

Dr. Robert O. Edbrooke , Jr. Student Activity Fund
The Robert O. Edbrooke, Jr. Student Activity Fund was established in 2016 by alumni/ae, parents, former colleagues and friends in memory of Dr. Robert O. Edbrooke, Jr. a beloved long-time Latin and history BB&N teacher from 1990 to 2015. To honor Dr. Edbrooke's many passions and BB&N activities, this fund is intended to provide support for needs outlined by the foreign language program including overseas travel,student activities related to the study of Latin and history, and special initiatives for women's athletic programs with a particular focus on tennis and basketball.

John H. Etter ’49 Financial Aid Fund
Established in 2011 in memory of former BB&N Athletic Director and Coach John H. (Jack) Etter ‘49, the Etter Financial Aid Fund provides spendable support for BB&N''s financial aid program.

The Fryberger Fund for Curriculum Development
Established in 2007 by Nancy Hoadley Fryberger ’54 and Dick Fryberger, the Fryberger Fund is a spendable fund that provides grants to faculty on all three campuses for initiatives that promote cross-campus and interdisciplinary curriculum development.

Cary Girod Fund for Environmental Awareness
The Cary Girod Fund for Environmental Awareness was established in 2009 by family and friends of Cary Girod, BB&N Upper School math teacher from 2008-09, to honor her memory following her untimely death. This fund is used to support or recognize Upper School faculty or student efforts to promote environmental awareness and “green” initiatives on the Upper School campus or schoolwide.

The Grace Music and Arts Fund
Established in 2014 by Kay and David Kane P’14, ’17, the Grace Fund provides supplemental funding to support expenses associated with BB&N's Upper School Performing and Visual Arts program with a preference for the music program.

Bartlett M. Hauthaway Scholarship Fund
Established in 2001 by Bartlett M. Hauthaway ’42, this fund provides a full scholarship annually for one or more Upper School students of good character who are strongly motivated, intellectually or artistically promising, able to cooperate, eager to lead or create, and who have a deep and abiding interest in nature.

The Kinasewich Senior Speakers Program Fund
The Kinasewich Fund was initiated by Chris Mosca ’75 in 2007 to honor the memory of Gene Kinasewich who served as a member of the faculty, a coach, and class dean from 1973 to 1977. This spendable fund supports a guest speaker program for BB&N Seniors to help them address issues they face as they leave BB&N.

Jack Knapp Upper School Community Fund
Established in 2010 upon the retirement of Upper School Director Jack Knapp, the Jack Knapp Upper School Community Fund recognizes Mr. Knapp’s dedication and commitment to BB&N during his five years of service from 2005-2010. In particular, the Fund honors Mr. Knapp’s work to enhance and support efforts to build community among Upper School students, parents, and faculty, and will be used to underwrite expenses associated with Upper School community-building activities.

Lower School Faculty Training Program Fund
Established in 2003 by Ethel Marran GP’12, this fund supports BB&N’s efforts to recruit and train young teaching professionals who will increase the diversity of the Lower School faculty and direct the After School Study Skills Program at the Lower School.

Lower School Social-Emotional Learning Fund
This Fund was established in 2016 in honor of Lower School Counselor Daisy Pellant to recognize her many contributions to the Lower School community from 2013-2016. The Fund is used to support Lower School parent and faculty education and activities focused on social-emotional learning, parenting, and community building.

Maginn-Chai Upper School Wellness Fund
Established in 2016 by BB&N parents Robert Maginn Jr. and Ling Chai P’19, ’22, ’23, this Fund supports BB&N's Upper School Wellness Program by providing funding for programs and services designed to promote the psychological, social, and emotional health and well-being of Upper School students.

Marsh Fund for Faculty Professional Development
Established in 2014 with a gift from former Browne & Nichols faculty member Paul Marsh, this Fund is to be used at the discretion of the Chair of the Upper School History Department to provide an honorarium and cover other expenses for outside speakers coming to History classes to prompt discourse and discovery on interfaith understanding and diverse communities.

Past Parents’ Financial Aid Fund
Established in 1999 by parents of BB&N graduates, this spendable fund provides financial aid for an Upper School student.

Al Rossiter Child Development Faculty Support Fund
Established in honor of Al Rossiter, former Assistant Head of School, whose commitment to his students and their families made a significant difference in the life of adolescent development and mental health issues throughout the School community. This fund supports faculty and staff professional development in the area of child development and childhood mental health. These funds may also be used to support the on-going development of an effective student advisory program.

Shera Selzer Lower School Faculty Innovation Fund
This Fund was established in 2017 by parents of the Class of 2023 through their Sixth Grade Gift to honor Lower School Director Shera Selzer upon her retirement from BB&N, following a distinguished 14-year career as a Beginner and Kindergarten teacher and administrator. This spendable fund will provide resources over and above the current professional development budget to fund Selzer Innovation Grants, to be given to individuals or groups of Lower School faculty and staff to develop new initiatives that sustain the spirit of Shera’s passions and priorities.
