Esteemed Muralist Visits Middle School

Middle School students had the pleasure of welcoming author and artist Katie Yamasaki to their campus this week to speak about social justice and her work as a muralist. Yamasaki comes from a huge, diverse family of artists and teachers and her mural work has enabled her to travel widely, creating visual dialogues among diverse communities. Through her work in schools, prisons, housing occupations, and hospitals, Yamasaki explained to students how she uses her art as a vehicle for dialogue and as a tool for communication.

Having painted more than 80 murals around the world, Yamasaki also utilized her artistic expertise to help the students craft small artworks that will be incorporated into a large mural for installation in the Library Learning Commons at the Middle School later this winter.
