Student Profiles
Derek, Sophomore

Scholar, Athlete.
The first impression you have of Derek is a physical impression—simply, he is a big guy, packing 215 lean pounds on a sculpted 5’10” frame. This is good news for the Knights football and wrestling teams, though far less good news for opposing teams’ wide receivers, upon whom he leaves different kinds of impressions by flattening them from his middle linebacker position (he also plays running back), or for those unfortunate enough to be in his weight class when wrestling season starts.
And though we might cut you some slack if you fell into athlete stereotypes after meeting Derek—especially if you saw him play—you’d be dead wrong.
True, there’s no denying his considerable athlete cred. He’s a football star who was an all-league middle linebacker in 8th—yes, 8th—grade, a wrestler who as a sophomore was runner-up in the New England championships, took 6th place at the national prep-school tournament, and recently scored a gold medal in the Bay State Games.
But then there’s the dedicated-student side of Derek, a young man with diverse interests and an affinity for subjects ranging from math and science (which he likes because in both “if you’re wrong, you’re wrong, and if you’re right, you’re right”) to art (drawing and watercolors are his favorites).
It’s his desire to excel in both the academic and athletic arenas, he says, that make BB&N the perfect place for him to be: “In sports and in academics, they keep pushing you and pushing you to be your best.”
