Semester Away Programs

BB&N endorses several semester away programs for students interested in studying off-campus during their sophomore or junior year. Rigorous academics coupled with experiential learning opportunities are the hallmark of the various programs. Whether students are living and working on an organic farm or exploring the architecture of the city of Rome, they gain access to experiences beyond the traditional classroom, are challenged to adapt to new environments, and make connections with the world around them. Programs for Juniors:Chewonki (Wiscasset, Maine) Application due: February 20 Program Emphasis: Appreciation of the natural world, coastal ecology, community. CityTerm (Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, NY) Application due: February 15 Program Emphasis: New York City as a living classroom, especially literature, history, art. High Mountain Institute (Leadville, Colorado) Application due: February 15 Program Emphasis: Leadership skills, wilderness experiences. Mountain School (Vershire, Vermont) Application due: February 7 Program Emphasis: Working farm, sustainable living. St. Stephen’s School* (Rome, Italy): Application due: February 15 Program Emphasis: Classical & Italian literature, art history. *Admission to St. Stephen's is decided by a committee of BB&N faculty. All St. Stephen's application material, including recommendations, should be submitted to Louise Makrauer, not mailed to St. Stephen's in Rome. The School for Ethics and Global Leadership (Washington, DC) Application due: February 15 Program Emphasis: Ethical, critical thinking skills and leadership development in the context of national politics and world issues. Programs for Sophomores:Swiss Semester (Zermatt, Switzerland). Application due: December 16 (with rolling admission after due date) Program Emphasis: humanities, hiking, skiing, art history. |
