Community Service
|
In order to expand our students’ horizons and instill a spirit of service to others, BB&N offers a variety of opportunities for US students to get involved in community service. The school organizes a community service afternoon during Mud Week each fall, whereby groups of students travel to local non-profits to volunteer. Every February, BB&N holds its all-school “Have-a-Heart” food drive for Boston Medical Center. The school has also organized service learning trips to Peru and the Dominican Republic, where students lived with families and participated in a number of building projects to benefit the community. This year we have added our Summer Immersion trip to Ecuador where students can earn 20 hours of community service during the two week trip. Students can also initiate their own projects through the Community Service Club. A community service assembly is held in the spring to recognize the contributions of students who have gone above and beyond the minimum community service requirement.
As a requirement for graduation, the Upper School asks each student to perform a minimum of 40 hours of community service. The following are some examples of the types of volunteer work that are eligible for community service credit:
· working directly with people in need; · performing administrative duties for a non-profit organization; · working with animals and the environment; · participating in BB&N-based activities including the BB&N Circus, Peer Tutoring Program, and Books, Basketball and Neighbors.

The following is a sampling of organizations at which BB&N students have volunteered, organized by category. Click on a category and you will be taken to a list of organizations. Click on an organization’s name and you will be taken to its web site, where you can read about what the organization does and what volunteer work is available. It is recommended that students get prior approval for community service work from the US Community Service Coordinators.
Be advised that the above list is not exhaustive. Excellent opportunities for meaningful community service can be found in your local community. Many more opportunities can also be found on the following web sites: www.teenlifeboston.com, www.bostoncares.org, www.volunteermatch.org, www.volunteersolutions.org, www.idealist.org.
