A highlight of BB&N's Celebrating Our Community Evening for Financial Aid on May 8, 2009, was the opportunity for members of the BB&N family to share stories about what community means to them, and to celebrate our history of pulling together to make sure there is a place at the table, a place in the classrooms, and a place in our hearts for students and families who might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience BB&N.
We invite you to share your story with us! See below for stories and testimonials already sent to us by alumni/ae, students, parents and faculty. (You can choose to include your name or not, but please be sure to note your affiliation with the School!)

"In 1937 the American economy was still mired in the Depression and my father, a social worker in Boston, could ill afford to provide his son with the kind of education he hoped would give him a good start in life. Thanks to a scholarship I entered the seventh grade at Browne & Nichols at Gerry's Landing, graduated from the Upper School in 1943, and after time in the Air Force, graduated from Cornell, got a PhD at Harvard, and taught at Princeton and the University of Pittsburgh where I was Chair of the English Department, from which I retired some years ago. It all started with a scholarship at B&N, and I would like to play a part in giving another youngster the same opportunity." ~B&N Alumnus, Class of 1943

"Not knowing a soul in the school, our son embarked on his first day with great trepidation. His fears were instantly calmed when he realized that everyone in the school (teachers/staff/students) were extremely friendly and welcoming. The sense of family that BB&N continually stresses is indeed a fact and not just words that are thrown out there.
BB&N provided an academic challenge that was welcomed by our son. He studies hard and works hard, but in the end, his effort is rewarded. I will often see him leave early for school, letting me know that he's meeting with one of his teachers for extra help. The same goes for after school--there are many days where he will stay late for the extra help. BB&N provides challenge, but also provides support to help you excel.
BB&N has meant many things to my son, but perhaps the most important quality that the school has taught is confidence. There is a level of expectation that all students are expected to conform to, and BB&N has been there every step of the way pointing him in the right direction.
Without financial aid, our son would not have been able to attend this school, and for this help, our family is very grateful. BB&N has opened many doors for him and ,but more importantly, gave him the confidence to walk through them with his head held high." ~BB&N Parent, Class of 2010

"Since our daughter came to BB&N a mere eight months ago, she has studied an ancient language, played two new sports, tried out several unusual science experiments, made many new friends from different neighborhoods and backgrounds, listened to Nat King Cole for the first time, learned the thrill of discussing Civil War battle strategies, shot her first claymation video, and read an entire Shakespeare play. "Both my wife and I are educators, her at the grammar school level and I at the college level. We have a son who graduated two years ago and a daughter completing the Middle School who will continue on as a freshman next year at the Upper School. To ask what BB&N has meant to us is a loaded question. The one word that always comes to mind is 'unique.' Unique in the curriculum and the arts: the school's standards for excellence are unmatched. Unique in the activities and athletic opportunities: our children have grown substantially because of the extracurricular options. Unique in the faculty and all the supporting staff: their credentials and work ethics are phenomenal. What truly is the differentiator compared to other schools are the people at BB&N. "The school experience has been terrific for our family. Our son graduated from BB&N and got in his first choice college thanks to great work done by the college counseling department. Our second child right now is in the process of selecting colleges to apply to.
Without the help of financial aid our children never would have gotten the education they have received at BB&N. They have been provided with a well rounded education: rigorous academics, challenging athletics, and a variety of opportunities in the arts.
The success of our son in college is a result of this preparation. He has noticed just how effective the academic discipline and work ethic he learned at BB&N really is at a college level.
Our children have been involved in many of the activities that the school offers and we have supported them: from sports to arts to leadership development.
We think BB&N has showed our children what a first class education is. Our youngest child is reminded everyday of this when she walks into the art studios in the new wing of the school. The spacious room on the top floor and the availability of materials create an inviting environment for creativity.
The talented teachers are caring and demanding and prepare students for what they will need to be successful when they leave BB&N.
