Array of BB&N Students Win Awards This Spring

BB&N students on all 3 campuses have been honored with a variety of awards this Summer:
Lower School
-Sixth grader William Marshall (Boat #15099 in the photo) made the US National Optimist Dinghy sailing team and has been invited to represent the US in an international sailing regatta in Holland this summer. He was also named U.S. Sailing's "Sailor of the Week" for the first week of May.
-Third grader Yugi Chan won 1st place in Division 4 of the Bay State Music Contest organized by Massachusetts Music Teachers Association and held at Fitchburg State College on May 10.
-Max Wiegand '17, a current 4th grader at BB&N, received Awards for High Honors in both mathematical and verbal reasoning from the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (JHU-CTY) 2009 International Verbal and Mathematics Talent Search. JHU-CTY is a world leader in gifted education, and conducts national and international talent searches to identify, assess, and recognize students with exceptional mathematical and/or verbal reasoning abilities. JHU-CTY hosts Awards Ceremonies to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Talent Search participants who earn high scores on specified test(s) for their grade, and have met or exceeded the required Awards Ceremony scores. Middle School -The following Middle School students attended the regional Middle School science fair at UMass Lowell on Saturday, May 9: Abby Baskin, first place
Upper School
-Talene Monahon '09 was recently announced the winner of the StageSource Scholarship Award. The StageSource Scholarship Awards program is part of the StageSource Education Initiative for ongoing outreach to area students pursuing interests in theatre. Scholarship applicants were evaluated for demonstrated exceptional artistic and intellectual achievements in the theatre, excellence of character, and a focus and commitment to theatre.
-Juniors Xavier Morse and Matt Cuddy have both been choosen by the US Department of State through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI for Youth)to recieve scholarships to study the Russian language in Russia.
-Several BB&N students recently earned awards in the high school division of the 18th annual statewide competitions sponsored by the Massachusetts Society for Medical Research (MSMR). Junior Suvayan Roy won first place for his poster, Benefits of Genetic Targeting in Lung Cancer Therapy. Natalie Kingston '11 took 2nd Place in MA with her poster, Huntington's Disease - Snipping the Diseased Allele. Kris Boelitz '11 recieved Honorable Mention with the poster Innovative Method Identifies Potential Treatment for Glioblastomas. They received their awards (certificates and for 1st/2nd place $500.00 and $250.00) at the MSMR Annual Meeting last month. BB&N students have participated in this competition each of the last four years and their work has received awards each year. The competition recognizes students who investigate recent biomedical research breakthroughs and then create compelling and informative posters about them.
