Manon, Grade 8

Manon
"I don't like drama."
“I was the youngest daughter in The Imaginary Invalid, a play about a man who thinks he has diseases. All along I’m thinking, ‘I don’t like drama. I don’t want to be in this play.’ But then when I performed, I thought, hmmm…maybe I want to try acting.
“My teacher pushed me just far enough. In history I had to recite the Gettysburg Address, and I have this big fear of public speaking. At first I was really nervous, but I learned how not to be nervous. I felt really calm, and I got an A+ on it. I overcame that whole public-speaking thing.

“The community here is really good. You can get to know your teachers more. In history class we went on a field trip to Boston. During lunchtime a bunch of us went into a store to make our teacher a Build-a-Bear. We gave him a Russian Cossack hat and aviators, just going for that cute look. I’d never made such a personal thing for a teacher before. He really appreciated it.

“I really like doing community service. I’ve done the Food Drive three times. We raised money to build a school in southern Sudan, and did a bake sale to buy mosquito nets to prevent malaria. I feel more and more like what I really want to do is help people. If enough people take action, something magnificent can happen.”
