A variety of school traditions mark the BB&N calendar at the Middle School—some old, some new, some part of the academic fabric of the school, others part of the social fabric. These traditions include: - Tea Party – Eighth graders who choose Wheel Thrown Pottery for their art elective learn to create basic shapes using different types of clay and glazes. They ultimately work to create a teapot, which is fired and glazed. The annual “Tea Party” is a fun event where these students actually get to put to elegant use the artwork they have created.
- Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast – A schoolwide celebratory feast featuring guest speakers and artists.
- Giving Thanks Day – An annual pre-Thanksgiving outreach initiative in which every member of the Middle School joins forces to perform a wide range of community service-oriented projects.
- Winterfest – The Middle School’s annual Winterfest concert ushers in the holiday season with a festive mix of chamber music, choral performances, jazz band romps, and whimsical theatrical interludes.
- Soup Bowl Dinner – For the past 15 years, Middle School students have been crafting, glazing, and firing ceramic soup bowls which are then purchased by parents for a community dinner in the fall. The proceeds of the event are donated to a charity (last year’s dinner benefited the Love and Understanding program, which supports the education and feeding of poor children in Vietnam).
- Pizza Lunch – Every Wednesday afternoon, Middle School students enjoy pizza for lunch. “Pizza Lunch” is organized by the Middle School Parents Association and is one of the highlights of the week!
