League of Knights: LEGO ROBOTICS: Tournament Prep

League of Knights classes are offered to our more dedicated students who have an interest in preparing for competition. Altough the classes are offered to all dedicated students, it is anticipated that a smaller subset of the class will be eligible to represent BB&N in the actual competitions. League of Knights classes typically run once a week for 1 hour and 30 minutes per class through the semester.  Additional costs for competition fees and expenses will be the additional responsibility of each competing family and will be brought to the attention of all affected families prior to competition. League of Knights classes are encouraged to fund raise to off-set the cost of competitions. Any fundraising activities must be approved by the class instructor as well as by the Manager of Extended Year Services (MEYS).  All monies received must be provided to the MEYS along with accounting documentation to be deposited in the League account.

Financial Aid may be available to any student that qualifies for aid that is also selected to compete in a League of Knights tournament or competition.  Aid request must be submitted in writing to the MEYS at least 30 days prior to competition. In general, students who are chosen to represent BB&N in a competition or tournament will be eligible to receive aid in the same proportion as he/she has been awarded for tuition.

In order for a student or group of students to enter into any competition or tournament as a representative of BB&N, they must comply with the standards of conduct representative of a BB&N student at all times.  BB&N will provide T-shirts for all League of Knights Teams to be worn during tournaments and competitions at no additional cost to the competing students.

Competition and Tournament details and dates will be provided by each League of Knights Instructor.

BB&N Lego Leauge students will work for possible entrance into the "First Lego League" (FLL) competion. FLL is a global program created by FIRST and The Lego Group in 1998 to get kids excited about applying science and technology to real-world problems.

Teams: Teams of 3 - 6, composed of Boys and Girls ages 9 – 14.

Goal: Build an autonomous robot designed to complete themed tasks within a time limit. Analyze, research, and invent a solution for a given assignment. Present and demonstrate their solution for a panel of judges.

Teamwork: FLL fosters effective collaboration as members work to complete and modify the team’s robot.

Presentation Skills: In addition to solving engineering problems, teams document their process, justify their decisions and demonstrate their innovations to the judges.

Creativity: The FLL Challenge’s tasks are completely open-ended, allowing teams to invent their own unique robotic solutions

Real-World Applications: This year’s Challenge is themed around Food safety and contamination. Teams get to see how their engineering skills can be applied to real-world problems.

In addition to the main FLL Challenge, Jr. FLL is a scaled-down version aimed at children ages 6 – 9 The simpler version requires teams to: Research a problem relating to the theme and create a presentation. Demonstrate their solution with a mechanical Lego creation.
