Upper School Thespians Perform "The Cherry Orchard"
Under the direction of theater teacher Mark Lindberg, Upper Schoolers tackled the work of Russian playwright Anton Chekhov in their fall production of The Cherry Orchard. A team of 15 actors and one dog told the story of a Russian family at the turn of the last century. Reluctant to acknowledge their financial troubles, the family must come to terms with the auction of their beloved childhood home, as well as its famous cherry orchard. The play reflects the socio-economic issues that occurred in Russia after the abolition of serfdom caused the rise of the middle class and the aristocracy to sink.
Originally written as a comedy, many believe this play to be a tragedy, forcing performers to find a balance between the two. The cast, BB&N’s smallest in some time and supported by a 10-person crew, did a great job delivering the comedic lines amidst the melancholy realization of what is to ultimately become of the family.
