LS Connections Breakfasts Continues to Draw Crowd

The “I want to be” Masks:

When “I Am” is Not Enough

At our last breakfast we worked on quilting squares for an “I Am” quilt, which tells all about the many things that we are.  But sometimes, “I am” is just not enough.   Sometimes who we want to be is just as important as who we are.

At the Connections Breakfast on January 5th we worked on “I want to be” masks.  These are masks that tell about our dreams and the things we imagine we could be.  These could be completely pretend, like the things we imagine when we play, or real things that we would like to be as we get older.

Some ideas were:

I want to be….

  • A gymnast
  • Spiderman
  • Able to dive off of the high dive
  • A singer
  • A soccer player
  • A prince
  • Able to fly
  • A writer
  • An artist
  • Wonder Woman
  • A skier
  • A power ranger
  • An architect

…or any other things that we dreamed or imagined that we might want to be.  We can all be many things, so we didn’t have to pick just one dream.  We could show many of them!

The Challenge

Use your mask to show the world your “want to be’s”.  You could use pictures, words, or symbols to show the many things that you dream.  Please try to use at least one word on your mask, because we will need the words for a project later on.  If you do not write words yet, get a friend, teacher, or family member at your table to help you.  Last time we got to hear about your “I Am.”  We are excited to hear all about what you want to be!

Our Creations

We all worked very hard on our “I want to be” masks.  We used lots of different materials like ribbon, felt, foam paper, gems, and images from magazines to make our masks.  We searched through our imaginations, using the magazines and materials for inspiration in our work.  We were all very excited about this project, and the teachers heard someone exclaim, “This should be longer so we have more time to make these!  Maybe we should come earlier…”  We decided that “I want to be” cannot always be finished in such a short period of time, so we will need to keep working on our masks.  Some of these are complete but others are works in progress.  At our next breakfast we will continue work on our masks, adding more to our “I want to be’s.”

“I want to be…”

As the teachers walked around the room, here are some of the great ideas that we heard:

  • I can’t decide between a singer and a writer
  • I think you can be both!
  • I want to be an opera singer when I grow up
  • I want mine all different colors, like I can be a rainbow
  • I can be a soccer player
  • Perfect- there are markers so I can write my own words on it
  • I’m a princess swimmer in mine
  • I want my hair like it is only green
  • I want to be everything, anything and everything  on this
  • I can be a Flamenco dancer from Spain
  • I have rainbow freckles
  • This is everything in the world that I can be
  • I am a scuba diver with sharks
