Over the past few weeks, Beginners North has been working on complicating the traditional story about Thanksgiving, engaging the multiple perspectives and experiences that are actually constitute this part of our history. Their critical thinking and willingness to look at the story from multiple perspectives has developed a more nuanced understanding of Thanksgiving within our classroom. You might think English teacher Rob Leith would have to wave a magic wand to get second semester seniors to write a 5,000 word essay and read a 750-page book in one week. But when it came to teaching a mini AP Harry Potter class this semester, Leith was actually the one under his students' spell.

One can’t help but get a welcoming vibe upon entering Sixth Grade reading and writing teacher Jaime Goldstein’s classroom. Overhead fluorescent lights are eschewed, replaced instead with lamps and strings of lights, photos of students’ families and pets adorn the walls, and a patterned rug in the middle of the room invites circular discussion and a cozy feel....
