Lower School
Carol Fine
In the lower school science program at BB&N, students learn primarily through hands-on experiments and observations. Students often ask, of all our activities, which is my favorite. This is a difficult question as I have many favorites. Along with hatching chicks, making (and then eating!) ice cream, and observing butterflies emerge from their paper thin chrysalises, I really enjoy sharing my love of trees with second graders each year.... Throughout last school year, a team of us at the Middle School worked closely together to develop and pilot changes to an already strong and successful advisory program. We had several goals in mind: streamline the curriculum between the grades into a two-year program, provide more opportunity for the 7th and 8th graders to interact with one another, and create systems that would, hopefully, promote a greater sense of community among the students.... Every year at BB&N has been different as I have rotated through the eight Latin courses and taught Ancient History in either the regular course, the world variant, or the interdisciplinary course established by Lee Behnke, Althea Cranston, Parrish Dobson, and me with a few others. It is with great enthusiasm that I embrace my role as the Director of Annual Giving at BB&N. Often misunderstood, Annual Giving is a critical component of the financial sustainability of our school. The Annual Fund supports all areas of the School’s operating budget including the academic program, arts, athletics, faculty salaries and professional development, and financial aid. This giving program helps to raise the funds necessary to bridge the gap ($6,680 this year) between tuition and the cost of a BB&N education for every student.... More
