BB&N espouses the philosophy of "educational athletics,"
participating and competing in athletics in an effort to learn more
about oneself and the world. Goal-setting and challenge, teamwork
and self-confidence, succeeding and failing, are some of the lessons
learned and values strengthened through involvement in athletics.
For nearly all of our students, sports are something they do literally every day - though far from the only thing. The school enjoys a state-of-the-art athletic facility and boasts some remarkable athletes. From time to time, a graduate even shows up in the Olympics. But our emphasis is on sports as an integral part of your total education - a unique way of understanding your body, testing yourself, and working with other people. Which isn't to say that we don't like to win, because we do. And we do win.
If our students are to learn from the lessons of participation and
competition, then constant and good sportsmanship is required and
expected. Respecting the opponent, official, coach, spectator and
teammate is the foundation of enjoying athletics and understanding
its value.
