Applying to the Lower School B-6

BB&N’s Lower School welcomes applications for all grades from Beginners (pre-Kindergarten) through Grade 6. Students may apply for any grade, though Beginners, Kindergarten and Grade 6 are the three Lower School growth points and have the largest number of openings. To enroll at BB&N, Beginners must have turned 4 years old by September 1; Kindergartners must be at least 5 years old. Parents/guardians of Lower School applicants should schedule an interview and tour in the fall or early winter (by January at the latest). Grade 6 student applicants are asked to attend these visits with their parents and participate in an interview; the tours and interviews are not designed for students applying for Beginners through Grade 5. All student applicants are required to attend evaluation visits on a date other than the parent/guardian interview. These student evaluations occur on selected dates in December and January. Grade 6 applicants are also required to take the ISEE or SSAT standardized test by January 15. Grade 5 applicants are not required to interview but are required to take the ISEE test (the SSAT is available only for students applying to Grade 6 or above). You may download a BB&N admission application by clicking on the appropriate link in the sidebar, or call the Admission Office to receive materials by mail. The written application includes information from parents, grade-appropriate school and teacher reports from the student’s current school, a student questionnaire for applicants to Grades 5 and 6, and an optional personal recommendation (for applicants to Grades 2-6 only). We also require transcripts for the current year and two prior years (if applicable). We base admissions decisions on a number of criteria, including a child’s interests and abilities, previous school record (if any), motivation for learning, and potential for succeeding at BB&N. Once accepted to the Lower School, your child will not need to reapply to BB&N's Middle and Upper Schools.
