Daily Life

Homework: Homework is an important component of the academic life at the Middle School. Work outside of the classroom helps students to expand the knowledge and the skill that they have gained during class time. The homework enables students to develop a greater facility in following directions, managing time effectively and developing independent study skills.

Academic Support: There are many avenues of academic support here at the Middle School, beginning with teachers and continuing through advisors and up to the Director of the Middle School.

Grade 8 Exams: Once a year, in March, Grade 8 students take written examinations, of a 90-minute duration, in each graded subject. These exams are meant primarily to prepare students for a successive number of timed tests that they can anticipate at the Upper School.

Pizza Lunch: Every Wednesday afternoon Middle School students enjoy pizza for lunch. "Pizza Lunch" is organized by the Middle School Parents Association and is one of the highlights of the week!

Tea Party: In the eighth grade, students may choose Wheel Thrown Pottery for their art elective. Students learn to create basic shapes using different types of clay and glazes. They ultimately work to create a teapot, which is fired and glazed. The annual "Tea Party" is a fun event where students actually use and enjoy the artwork they have created.

Student Leadership: Students are given a voice in the Middle School through Middle School Leadership Council. Each homeroom elects one representative to serve on the Council to work on student-centered issues such as Spirit Week, Middle School Dances, and Snack choices. Because students are taking more initiative in the life of the school, they are expected to take on more responsibility as leaders of the school.

Assembly: At BB&N the school week begins and ends with a student led assembly. Eighth graders facilitate the meetings by organizing the announcements and reporting the daily events at the Middle School. During assembly students will hear the latest results from the captains of a sports team, or they will learn about the new fundraiser from the students in the Community Service club.
