Teacher Training Institute at BB&N

Thank you for your interest in the Teacher Training Institute at Buckingham Browne & Nichols, a collaborative internship program between BB&N’s Lower School and Lesley University. This fall marks the 31st year of the program at BB&N; well over 500 teachers have graduated from the program during that time.

Buckingham Browne & Nichols (BB&N) is an energetic and vibrant community of learners, who are truly excited about the educational experience. BB&N is a coeducational day school in Cambridge, Mass., whose mission is to foster intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and a deep concern and respect for others. The educational program provides a rigorous core curriculum, taught in flexible and innovative ways, which is strengthened by its commitment to the arts and athletics.

In cooperation with Lesley University, BB&N offers a 12- or 15-month, site-based teacher licensure and Master’s degree program in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education.

We believe our Teacher Training Institute offers a superb way to train teachers whether you are in the beginning stages of the profession or are currently a certified teacher. By the end of the academic year, teachers-in-training have taught in virtually every subject area studied in grades PreK-6, participated in curriculum design, created professional portfolios, joined parent conferences, and back-to-school nights, and written student assessments.

“I can’t imagine a more effective, nurturing, and safe environment to challenge yourself, take risks, and prepare yourself to have your own classroom.”
Ben Goldhaber

The Program

Lesley University School of Education’s affiliations with six independent schools and one public school system offer students the opportunity to complete a 15-month field placement while taking graduate education courses. Leading to a Master’s degree and teacher certification, these programs connect theory with practice in a comprehensive manner, and include courses and seminars held at each school site as well as at the Lesley University campus in Cambridge.

Designed for people with no previous teaching experience, these programs are completed in approximately 12-14 months, beginning in the summer and finishing at the end of the following summer, with the exception of the program at Brookline, which lasts two years. Student-teacher interns in the Collaborative Internship Program actively participate in all aspects of school and classroom life: working with students, developing curriculum, participating in teacher-parent conferences, and joining in many other school activities. The Collaborative Internship Program gives students a comprehensive teacher education experience.

Program Description

BB&N offers three programs of study each leading to full Massachusetts licensure and a Master’s in Education:
  • Early Childhood Education: Pre K – Grade 2
  • Elementary Education: Grades 1-6
  • Moderate Disabilities: Pre K – Grade 8
This program is in collaboration with The Carroll School located in Lincoln, Mass.
See the right column of this page to download course sequence sheets for these three programs.

Students are fully immersed in the classroom under the tutelage of an experience masters teacher, who is responsible for a grade or specific subject. By the end of the academic year, teachers-in-training have taught in virtually all homeroom disciplines (language arts, math and social studies) in two separate grade placements. They have also participated in curriculum design, created professional portfolios, joined parent conferences and back to school nights, and written student assessments.

Graduates of the BB&N Teacher Training Institute teach in both independent and public school settings and are eligible for teacher licensure in approximately 40 states. Graduates of the BB&N program have excellent job placement upon graduation.

"My mentor teachers – all three of them – exceeded my expectations. They are tremendously knowledgeable and have exceptional presence and poise in the classroom.”
– Maura Pritchard
