Welcome from the Head of School
Rebecca T. Upham![]() My office at the Upper School of Buckingham Browne & Nichols sits at a rounded corner of Renaissance Hall, the newest structure on campus, and one which wraps around a center courtyard. On a given day I hear strains of Mozart escaping from our orchestra and chorale rehearsal spaces above me; I note the excited dialogue and occasional laughter from the round-table history classroom next door; I see the blur of scholar athletes on the fields through my window; I admire the engaging student art work adorning the hallways outside, and I partake in the camaraderie occurring between students and faculty in the sunny courtyard just beyond. There is an abundance of activity and learning happening at every level, and on each of our three campuses, and I feel privileged to be a part of it. In my eight years as Head of School at BB&N I have witnessed this dynamic learning environment on all three of our campuses. This is a special place, with a rich legacy of teaching bright, curious students who come from a broad range of backgrounds and with a broad range of interests. Together, we create a community where students are offered not only a world-class education, but a world of possibilities. As we build on that tradition today, BB&N has earned a well-deserved reputation for forward-thinking approaches to teaching and learning. To cite just a few examples, students here have the option of studying Russian, Chinese, and Arabic along with more commonly taught languages. They also have the opportunity to take advantage of international travel and study abroad programs in a host of countries. In our classrooms we have pioneered programs such as the Upper School’s new history and social studies curriculum, which instills a distinctly global perspective into the full range of courses offered. Forward-looking programs such as these on all three of our campuses help ensure that BB&N graduates will leave our fold with the skills and knowledge to thrive not just for the next four years, but for decades after that in our rapidly changing world. I encourage you to delve into our website to learn about our community and our offerings. We look forward to meeting you should you visit any of our campuses. |
