Upper School Students Attend People of Color Conference

Six BB&N Upper School students traveled to Seattle WA. to attend the People of Color Conference (PoCC) hosted by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). The conference aims to bring together people of color for networking and support, as well as find ways to build and sustain inclusive, diverse communities.

“The Conference was amazing,” said Tremana White '07. “I have never been around so many diverse people from private schools.”

Teachers, students and administrators from across the United States along with several foreign countries gathered together to discuss important issues such as multiculturalism, celebrating diversity, and the different ways in which people experience independent schools. This year, PoCC focused specifically on how NAIS can serve equity and justice for people of color in an independent school setting.

“It was really great to be surrounded by people who understand what things I am going through with being a student of color at a private school,” White added. “I recommend the trip to students who feel that diversity is important, whether they are a student of color or not.”

In addition to White, other students who attended were: Timur Khanachet '07, Tiffany Sommadossi '08, Lyndia Personnat '10, Kendrick Evans '10 and Maggie Brelis '10.
