Students Impress with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Documentary

BB&N students, faculty, and parents who attended the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast were treated to a special screening this year.

The centerpiece of the morning was a short documentary, He Dared To Dream, created by Middle School students which focused on the life of Dr. King. Narrated by and featuring students, the film documented the civil rights movement from the period of Rosa Parks' famous 1956 Montgomery, Alabama bus stop arrest to King's assassination in 1969.

Under the guidance of MS Art and Diversity Committee Chair Libby Maclaren, student volunteers worked with film maker, director, and producer David Medzorian to shoot the documentary during October of this year. The film interlaced authentic footage and audio from King's life with student commentary filmed at the Middle School.

“The idea came to me from Joyce Allen–Beckford (Diversity Consultant to BB&N) in a conversation we were having about the MS Diversity Committee,” Maclaren recalls. “David had worked with the Winsor School and produced a similar film that was well received by the community…I thought it was a great idea.”

After soliciting student volunteers, Maclaren helped them to write and perfect their voice-overs and on-screen vignettes. The result was a powerful and informative film, replete with period footage, music, and interview/speech excerpts.

“It was very gratifying to see this come to fruition because it was something I've been trying to facilitate for a couple years,” added Allen-Beckford.

The Middle School students involved in the video project He Dared To Dream were Stephanie Uhlmann '12, Hayden Kursh '12, Dash Elhauge '12, Harry Posner '12, Even Hoyt '11, Sierra Schwartz '11, Xavier Morse '11, and Molly Davis '11.
